Ageing in Salt Lake County: Preferences, Expectations, and Desires of Residents - Dec 13, 2024
Abstract
The discussion of age-friendly cities has grown more popular as governments and planners face the challenge to accommodate a quickly growing older and more urban population. However, the design of an age-friendly city first relies on understanding the needs and preferences of current residents as they age, given that age-friendly cities are not a one-size-fits-all approach. This study fills a current gap in the literature about the expectations, preferences, and desires of Salt Lake County residents for their ageing experience in their current city or township within the county. Through an electronic survey, a diverse array of respondents (n = 60) living in Salt Lake County answered closed-choice and open-response questions that provided both quantitative and qualitative data around their demographics and opinions on ageing in their particular city or township. The quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistic, including crosstabulation, and the open-responses were coded for significant and common themes to produce the qualitative data. In general, respondents believe that their cities or townships in Salt Lake County would be safe for them as an older adult, but that many improvements are needed to make Salt Lake County age-friendly, particularly in the realm of public transportation. This research is significant as Salt Lake County must begin quickly preparing for an older and more urban population, and resident feedback can best direct the allocation of resources and funding to achieve this goal.
